Abstract

Cerebrospinal fluid and sera from 20 patients with tuberculous meningitis, 29 patints with aseptic meningitis, and from appropriate control individuals were assayed for immunoglobulin G activity to tuberculin purified protein derivative(PPD) and lipoarabinomannan-B(LAM-B) antigens by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA). A significant difference was found between the tuberculous meningitis group and other groups(the aseptic meningitis and control). Seroreactivity of cerebrospinal fluid was higher than that of sera. The sensitivity and specificity of this test in cerebrospinal fluid was 70% and 93.9% to PPD, and 80% and 95.9% to LAM-B antigerL The ELISA method rneasuring IgG antibody to PPD and LAM-B in cerebrospinal fluid respectively or simultaneously proved to be a simple and reliable rnethod for early diagnosis and management of patient with tuberculous meningitis.
