Abstract
The hemispheric lesions affecting the structure or pathways related to autonomic function may cause autonomic dysfunction including heart rate. By using the method, beat-to-beat heart rate variation during deep breathing, we studied the relationship between hemispheric lesion and autonomic function. 45 patients were selected for the study, 15 with left hemispheric lesion, 15 with right hemispheric lesion and age matched 15 normal control group were selected. We found the heart rate variation during deep breathing in right hemispheric lesion group (4.60 beats/min) was lower than that of left hemispheric lesion group (8.60 beats/min) and of normal control group (15.80 beats/min). So, it is suggested that right hemisphere may play a greater role in autonomic function than left hemisphere. But, additional studies will provide a more detailed relationship between hemispheric lesion and autonomic function.
